Biography


Dr. Al-Hasan gained his PhD in Strategic Marketing from Aberystwyth University-Wales- UK in the year 2000. The main theme of the research thesis was Benchmarking and Competiveness of the Welsh Agri-Food Industry. During his PhD study, Al-Hasan had some of his research translated to German by Bonn University for its importance as he was one of the first to apply the concept of benchmarking in the cooperative sector. Al-Hasan later moved on to De Montfort University-Leicester-England as a senior lecturer in marketing, where he worked under Professor Baron’s leadership. In 2001 Dr. Al-Hasan joined Glamorgan University with the main task of developing the Middle East market and he was one of the first few marketers to gain the status of a Chartered Marketer across the UK in 1999.

In the last 10 years, Dr Al-Hasan has successfully supervised several PhD’s, in areas such as, competiveness and marketing innovation, cultural marketing, SMEs, TQM, benchmarking, global telecommunications and marketing of higher education. Dr. Al-Hasan has a track record of more than 300 successful postgraduate dissertations supervision in areas of Benchmarking, Competitiveness, CRM, Banking, Retailing, E-commerce, Higher Education, Islamic Banking and Telecommunications. The majority of these were Bahraini companies (private and public) as Glamorgan Business School has strong ties with Bahrain over the last 12 years or so. Also, I was involved with the DBA programme.

About the Special Issue
Islamic Banking is a system that follows spirit and values of Islam which is governed by some principles from Islamic Shariah, it has a wide scope. Islamic banking is referred as the transformation of conventional money lending system into asset backed financing transactions conducted by various financial institutions.
A paper which includes various topics like Islamic Financial Instruments, role of Sharia’a boards in Islamic banking, Islamic finance, socially responsible investment, Islamic banks, etc. are considered for publication in the special issue.

Biography


Murat is a professor of economics at Istanbul Commerce University where he is the Director of the Center for Industrial Policy and Development and a member of the board of the Finance Institute. He is a Board director at TUBITAK (Turkish Agency for Scientific and Technological Research) and a partner at PGlobal Global Advisory and Training Services, an Ankara based international advisory company. He is a member of the Economic Advisory Council of Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. Murat holds and has held high level executive responsibilities in financial and non-financial corporations including as director and chairman. He has project finance, corporate finance and economic development experience in various countries in Europe, Africa, North America and Asia with tenures at institutions including the International Monetary Fund, the Islamic Development Bank and the Turkish Prime Ministry. He has authored or led financial, macroeconomic, sectoral studies, impact, feasibility and financial valuation studies. He has taught at different universities such as Georgetown, Yale and Obuda Universities and provided professional training classes in various countries.

Previously, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration at THK University in Turkey. He authored a number of books and articles in economics, development and finance. His most recent books have been published by international publishers Springer and Peter Lang, covering sustainable development, industrial policy, economic planning, industrial policy and suitable design of public procurement policies aiming at increasing the technological level in emerging countries. He writes columns at newspapers and financial journals, and is a frequent speaker at various fora organized by institutions such as Global Economic Symposium (GES), Yale University, European Investment Bank Institute, Duke University, Prime Ministry of Turkey, COMCEC, Economic Cooperation Organization, Dubai Economic Council, CFO Forum-Vienna, Khazanah Megatrands Forum, The Economist Round Table, Ewha Women’s University (Korea), Wirtshaftsrat, APU Ritsumeikan University (Japan), Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, Universita degli Studi di Parma and Eurofinance Conferences. He is actively involved in the organization of Istanbul Finance Summit (Chairman of the Advisory Board) and Sarajevo Business Forum (Member of the Advisory Board). He sits in the advisory boards of various other national and international institutions, platforms and academic journals. He has received various awards for his research and professional services. He holds an MBA degree from Yale University, Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from Bilkent University, an MSM (management) degree from Boston University and a B.Sc. degree (mechanical engineering) from Bogazici University.
